Exploring the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a master class in the vastness of Africa and the limitless variety of nature. Sanbona's 209 square miles span three unique biomes, where the scale shifts from the grandeur of the Cape Fold Mountains and majestic African elephants to the fields of flowering succulents and the Riverine rabbit, one of the rarest animals on Earth. The reserve is also home to the world's only free-roaming, self-sustaining pride of white lions, often spotted on the daily guided game drives. Game drives also give guests an opportunity to view the ancient rock art of the indigenous San people, the first inhabitants of the Western Cape.
This rugged setting is the backdrop to some of the most luxurious accommodations in South Africa. Guests have the option of opulently appointed tents in a secluded ravine or one of two lodges offering more traditional refinements. The private deck at the Gondwana Lodge overlooks a popular evening watering hole, where guests may watch the animals with a glass of wine from a nearby winery and gaze up at the stars.
